Grant Dowling

History Teacher

My name is Grant Dowling, and I’m currently completing my Ph.D. in Philosophy at Stanford University, where I’ve spent the last several years teaching, mentoring, and coordinating academic programming in the humanities. With degrees from Columbia University and the University of Chicago, my background is rooted in interdisciplinary thinking, with a strong foundation in classical studies, philosophy, writing, and the history of ideas. I’ve supported students at every level—and bring a broad perspective on how to navigate academic systems thoughtfully and authentically.

In addition to teaching and advising, I’ve worked behind the scenes in academic administration at institutions like Columbia and Stanford, giving me a deep understanding of how admissions, faculty collaboration, and student services function. I’ve also worked with diverse student populations, including incarcerated students and international applicants, and I’m committed to inclusive, accessible mentorship.

I believe students should be able to be curious across disciplines—your passion doesn’t have to fit into one box. Reading historical texts with students we can wake the voices of the dead, communing with other human beings across time. My hero Socrates was happiest when he was refuted, getting something wrong or being frustrated is a chance to grow!

I have a strong interest in the arts (for example, avant-garde Bay Area films of the 1960s and James Joyce) and ethical debate (I have coached Ethics Bowl teams and organized public lectures). I collect vinyl records and stickers.
